LACANET Partner Institutions

Institut Pasteur du Cambodge (IPC)

IPC is a research institute of public utility under the patronage of the Ministry of Health of the Royal Government of Cambodia. It belongs to the International Network of Pasteur Institutes with which it develops ongoing collaborations. IPC’s main activities are oriented towards biomedical research and epidemiology of infectious diseases. It provides support to Public health through activities of reference for rabies, arboviruses, influenza, epidemiology and monitoring, in partnership with health authorities. Being granted with modern equipment and highly qualified staff, and equipped with a platform for comprehensive medical and biological analyses that is unique in Cambodia and subject to a quality assurance process, IPC also responds to human zoonotic disease outbreaks, while developing cutting-edge diagnostic technologies. In addition to being the LACANET One Health project’s Principal Investigator, IPC also leads human and surveillance field work in Cambodia, mosquito surveillance in Lao P.D.R. and Cambodia, as well as laboratory training in Cambodia.

Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS)

WCS has unparalleled experience in conducting wildlife disease surveillance in the region; since 2006 WCS has promoted the One Health concept through its avian influenza and PREDICT1 project works in both Lao P.D.R. and Cambodia, building the national capacity for zoonotic disease surveillance and diagnostics in these countries. As part of the LACANET One Health project, WCS leads wildlife surveillance field and training activities.

Cambodian National Veterinary Research Institute (NaVRI)

NaVRI is part of the Animal Health Production Department of the Cambodian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. It has been in charge of animal health, research and disease outbreak investigations since 2007. The institute is therefore strongly involved in all of the project’s aspects related to animal health, including contact with village animal health workers, district and provincial vets, information dissemination at local and national levels. NaVRI also leads the LACANET One Health project’s livestock surveillance activities in Cambodia and conducts laboratory diagnostics on samples.

The Lao-Oxford-Mahosot-Hospital-Wellcome-Trust Research Unit (LOMWRU)

LOMWRU is working within the Microbiology Laboratory of Mahosot Hospital in Vientiane, where it has gained 12 years’ experience in providing human infectious disease diagnostics. LOMWRU conducts high quality diagnostic services for infectious diseases, with a Biosafety Level 3 laboratory for rickettsial and viral culture (run according to Oxford safety regulations), a molecular diagnostics laboratory (PCR & LAMP) and serology laboratory (ELISA & IFA). It is also part of the British NEQAS system for quality assurance of bacterial culture and susceptibility testing, as well as the WPRO scheme for anti-Japanese encephalitis virus IgM ELISA testing. LOMWRU is very active in building Lao human and technical capacity for diagnosis and research, providing in house training for techniques such as bacterial culture, PCR and ELISA and transfer these skills to other Lao institutions. As part of the LACANET One Health project, LOMWRU leads human surveillance field and laboratory training activities in Lao P.D.R.

 

Lao National Animal Health Laboratory (NAHL)

NAHL is the leading Lao research centre for emerging diseases in animal and human resource capacity building in the animal health sector. NAHL leads the LACANET One Health project’s livestock surveillance activities in Lao P.D.R. and conducts laboratory diagnostics on samples.

 

Other LACANET project’s beneficiaries and stakeholders

The LACANET One Health project aims to increase collaboration and joint researches between the human, animal and environmental sectors. Likewise, some of the LACANET One Health project’s activities and trainings also involve other stakeholders, such as the Cambodian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the Cambodian Ministry of Health, the Lao Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the Lao Ministry of Ministry of Health, etc.
